Altcoin Season Index Stalls at 51 as Bitcoin Dominance Holds Above 58%

The crypto market’s rebound from recent lows is showing up more clearly in select altcoins, but broad-based ‘altcoin season’ momentum remains elusive. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index held at 51 on Monday (Aug. 4 UTC), keeping the market firmly in a neutral zone and well below the 75 threshold typically associated with a sustained alt-led cycle.

The Altcoin Season Index measures how many of the top 100 non-stablecoin assets by market capitalization have outperformed Bitcoin (BTC) over the past 90 days. A reading of 51 sits between ‘Bitcoin season’ (25 or lower) and ‘altcoin season’ (75 or higher), signaling that performance leadership across the market remains mixed rather than decisively rotating away from BTC.

Historically, the index has been capable of sharp swings. CoinMarketCap data shows this year’s peak at 78 on Sept. 20, 2025—close to altcoin-season territory—while the trough hit 14 on Dec. 19, 2025, a level associated with a pronounced BTC-led phase. Since that December low, the index has climbed back toward the low-50s, but it has stalled there since last month, suggesting the current move is more consistent with narrowing return differentials than a sweeping risk-on rotation into smaller tokens.

Market share metrics reinforce that interpretation. Bitcoin dominance stood at 58.6%, unchanged from the prior week, indicating that capital concentration in BTC remains intact. The share attributed to other altcoins inched up to 31.1% from 30.8%, while Ethereum (ETH) dominance slipped to 10.3% from 10.5%.

In practical terms, analysts often read a stable BTC dominance above the high-50% range as evidence that flows are still seeking perceived safety and liquidity in the market’s benchmark asset—even as individual altcoins stage local rebounds. The modest expansion in the “other altcoins” bucket suggests some incremental risk appetite, but not enough to signal a decisive market-wide transition.

On a capitalization basis, Bitcoin’s market cap was approximately $1.279 trillion, with 24-hour trading volume around $26.06 billion, according to the dataset cited. Aggregate altcoin market capitalization was about $988 billion, with 24-hour volume of roughly $30.63 billion.

As of 1:12 p.m. Monday in Seoul (12:12 a.m. ET), Bitcoin traded at $63,741, up 1.10% on the day, while its 90-day cumulative return was reported at -21.76%. For now, the steady index reading near 51 suggests the market is still in a transitional phase—recovering, but not yet displaying the breadth typically required to label the environment a full-fledged ‘altcoin season’.
